The conference is organized jointly by the Landau Center at the Hebrew University and the University of Kiel. It is dedicated to questions of asymptotic geometric analysis, to the interactions between finite-(high-)dimensional Banach spaces and convex geometry. The emphasis will be to compare recent results and ideas in both areas and to study the methods used, in particular those of analytic and probabilistic nature.

Typical topics would include e.g. convex geometric inequalities, volume calculations, measure transportation, random constructions of convex bodies, Dvoretzky's theorem and its ramifications, symmetrizations of convex bodies, approximations of convex bodies, random matrices, related methods in discrete mathematics or questions of complexity.

The program is available now .
Young researchers and interested mathematicians are very welcome to participate in the conference. We intend to restrict the lectures to topics in asymptotic geometric analysis as outlined above, in order to allow for sufficient time for further discussions. The conference will start Monday, April 7, 2003 (in the morning) and end Friday, April 11, 2003 (in the afternoon). Suggested arrival day would be April 6, departure day April 12. There will be a conference fee of € 25. If you are interested to participate in the conference, please send a (pre-)registration e-mail to
convex@math.uni-kiel.de

with your postal address, e-mail, fax. If you propose to give a lecture, please include the title of the talk. We then ask you to send us a short abstract of the lecture until February 1, 2003 or earlier. In case you do not intend to come for the full week, please indicate the days of your stay in Kiel.

Accommodation will be in hotels in Kiel where you should make reservations yourself by internet/electronic mail or telephone/fax.

Hotels

We have made block reservations of rooms with three hotels at redued prices to be held until 4 weeks before the conference starts. You are asked to make reservation of a room yourself by email, fax or phone, giving the keyword "convex". This will guarantee the reduced price. The rooms in the block reservations not booked by participants of the conference until March 7 will be possibly allocated to other guests. We thus ask you to reserve the rooms in time.
The InterCity-Hotel and the Berliner Hof are in the city center. The InterCity-Hotel is a modern hotel adjacent to the railway station and opposite to the stop of the airport bus KIELIUS, the Berliner Hof is a traditional hotel only about 150m from the railway station. Both hotels provide bus tickets (included in the room rate) valid during your stay in Kiel. There are good bus connections from the railway station to the university.
The hotel Düvelsbek is 3km north of the city center within walking distance of the university (20min). This hotel is less expensive.
Rooms are typically held until 6 pm on the arrival day . If you arrive later you should notify the hotel. In case you have to cancel your room reservation, please do this at least 2 days in advance.
There will be a registration desk for the conference in the InterCity-Hotel in the late afternoon of Sunday, April 6.

How To Get To Kiel

There is an airport in Kiel, but there are only very few flights connecting Kiel to the outside world. You may want to check with your travel agent. Many of you who come from outside Germany might choose to fly into Hamburg and then take the bus from the airport there. The bus is called appropriately "Kielius" and the company that runs this bus is called "Autokraft". The price for a single ticket is € 14 and € 24 for a return ticket. It takes the bus 90 minutes from the airport in Hamburg to the train station in Kiel, there is one intermediate stop in Neumünster. The bus leaves from the airport 18 minutes after the hour, every hour from 8 til 24, except 18 and 22 on Sundays.
Some of the participants will travel after the conference to Oberwolfach. The German railway system introduced recently new pricing. The main point is that you get a 40% reduction if you book a week in advance and 25% if you book 3 days in advance. But you have to use precisely the train that you are booking. Also there are group rates (a group means more than one person). The regular price for a one-way-ticket is € 108,40.
On the internet you find detailed information on train schedules.

Shops

Next to the Auditorium Maximum there is a bank, a copy shop, a grocery shop (where you may also buy phone cards, two card telephones are adjacent). There is also a travel agency in the Mensa building.
Close to the railway station there is a big mall, the so called "Sophienhof". It also has a food court.

Email and Mail

E-mail facilities will be available in the Department of Mathematics on the 5th floor. Urgent messages may be sent to the departmental fax number (++49)-431-880-4091.

Public Transportation in Kiel

There are three bus-lines from the railway station to the university: 22, 32 and 91.
A ride by taxi from the train station to the university costs about € 7.
You can look up the locations of the hotels and the university on our map of Kiel.
