Abstract:  The equation describing the vibrations in a string is the oldest partial differential equation, but still it serves as a standard example in many new theories. We use it to introduce the class of port-Hamiltonian systems. This is a class of open physical systems (i.e. systems which can interact with their environment) and for
which there exists an internal energy function/Hamiltonian whose change can only happen via the boundary.

For the class of port-Hamiltonian systems we present some easy checkable properties, such as existence of solutions. Furthermore, we show that within this class it is very easy to study networks of for instance flexible systems.
